Sarongs are many things to many people and hav been known by different names.  In theSouth Pacific island they are called Pareos, in places like Indonesia, Thailand and the Phillipines they are called surongs. In India they call them sri and in Africa they are called kanga. In history they Romans had togas. While the name sarong is the most popular, the other names are still know and used.
